About Cosmetic Surgery

Plastic surgery is a surgical subspecialty whose broad purpose is to minimize both cosmetic and functional deformities which result from trauma, birth defects, or disfiguring illness. Derived from the Greek word plastikos, which means to shape or to mold, plastic surgeons are sculptors of the human form.

Because of plastic surgeons’ long and broad training, they are capable of performing a wide variety of procedures. The requisite five to eight year post-medical school training period allows most plastic surgeons the ability to perform much more than just cosmetic surgery. In fact, most plastic surgeons perform hand surgery, microsurgery, cosmetic surgery and reconstructive surgery. While each plastic surgeon may have an area of greatest focus, all board-certified and board-eligible plastic and reconstructive surgeons share a common training background.

- Separating data for round and Style 153 investigational devices

- Including 10-12 year European rupture prevalence data

- Company ends availability of Style 153 for U.S. clinical studies

- Company in final discussions with FDA for expanding access to BioDimensional(TM) Style 410 Matrix cohesive gel implant to supplant Style 153 breast implant

- Company intends to update its Style 410 PMA to include 3-year follow-up data and new 5-9 year European rupture prevalence data

After consideration of the outcome of the April 2005 FDA Advisory Panel meeting and in consultation with the FDA, the company modified its responsive gel PMA by separating data for eight round and the shaped Style 153 investigational devices. This PMA modification also included new 10-12 year European data for these styles.

GAITHERSBURG, MD – The FDA advisory panel’s 7-2 vote on April 13, 2005 to recommend to the FDA that Mentor’s silicone breast implants be approved with conditions is applauded by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the two largest plastic surgery membership organizations. This recommendation comes 13 years after the FDA restricted access to the silicone implants because of safety concerns.

Saline or Silicone…How do I choose?

Breast implants can serve one or more of a number of purposes; breast cancer victims can use breast implants for reconstructive purposes after mastectomy, or women with asymmetrical breasts may use a single breast implant to balance the difference in size.

Following pregnancy, many women opt for breast implant surgery to correct reductions in breast size, resulting from fluctuating hormones. And of course many breast implant candidates are simply interested in creating a more flattering contour.

Since 1992, silicone gel-filled implants have been available only to breast reconstruction patients and patients undergoing breast revision surgery. In order to receive silicone, women must be enrolled in clinical trials.

It is worth explaining the differences between a silicone gel-filled and a saline-filled breast implant, which is an alternative to the silicone gel implant. The outer shell of both silicone and saline implants is made of a solid silicone material. Solid silicone is widely used in implantable medical devices. In contrast, silicone gel implants are filled with silicone gel, which is a semi-solid. Saline-filled implants are filled with the same kind of salt water that is used in I.V. fluids.
